In 1982 the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Taizhou Hospital was formerly founded as an independent specialty surgical department. It provides education and treatment for diseases of the thorax, including the lungs, esophagus, mediastinum, chest wall, as well as acquired and congenital diseases of the heart.

Only 25 beds and 200 patients discharged every year in 1990s, but now 43 beds are in our department and more than 1400 patients are discharged annually. The open heart cardiac surgical volume has increased rapidly through 120 cases in 2005,compared to 20 cases in 2000. The Video Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery (VATS) program remains the leading program in Zhejiang province even in whole china in terms of variety and quality,

The history reflects advances achieved in knowledge and skill in these fields at Taizhou hospital and rapidly changing to accommodate the needs of our patients and students during the past years.

Video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) surgically corrects many types of diseases within the chest, while minimizing the injury brought by operations. Many procedures which were previously performed with larger incisions can now be done thoracoscopically, with comparable results. The typical result for our patients is less discomfort and less time in the hospital. And it can help the patients recover more rapidly.

Since 1995 we have performed more than 3000 VATS, and 400 patients undergo this kind of operations here every year now. At Taizhou Hospital we have pioneered the use of video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery for such diseases including:

Spontaneous pneumothorax

Lung volume reduction

Hyperhidrosis
Mediastinal tumor
Esophageal cancer
Pulmonary neoplasm
Empyema
Encapsulated hydrothorax
Malignant thoracic effusion
